When you are accepted into the Sales Management Development Program (SMDP) you’ll have an opportunity to experience a world-renowned, accelerated program designed to build a thorough foundation in consumer goods sales and sales management. You’ll be well prepared and well on your way towards an advanced career that can span sales, marketing, brand management and beyond.
Our industry is decentralized with Suppliers, Distributors and Retail Customers all playing a unique part of the sales cycle. Your assignments will be actively involved in developing marketing strategy across those 3 key areas as much as they are in sales execution itself.
Candidates who succeed in our program generally have leadership experience in their background and are definitely results oriented. Program graduates are almost always self-assured, outgoing, great problem solvers and have a passion for building relationships. Excellent academic performance is a must. All SMDP participants start as a sales representative and training begins there. You’ll have sales training and education classes once a week for 8 weeks or more. During this time, you’ll also be able to ride along with sales leaders, which will provide you exposure to the entire sales process. Shortly after, you’ll start to make sales calls to existing retail clients accompanied by your District Manager and build skills quickly. You’ll be working with long standing clients who know the Gallo brand and your role is to support existing accounts, educate and build business with our newest products. This is not a cold-calling program. You’ll have an extensive amount of support and resources behind you all the way, along with the most advanced mobile sales technology. This phase can span an average of 18 months, depending on your progress and development.
Progressing through the tiers will lead to an appointment, actually a promotion, to District Sales Manager. You’ll be responsible for a team of 4-5 sales representatives. This tier focuses on developing leadership skills as you gain critical insights in strategic thinking, critical problem solving, forecasting and sales strategy. The challenges are exciting and the rewards really start to add up as well. As a DM, you’ll build relationships, and represent Gallo at marquee industry events. You’ll give sales presentations, educate new sales reps and be well on your way to becoming a wine and spirits expert.
The third tier in the SMDP program is promotion to Field Marketing Manager. At this stage, you are responsible for communicating the Gallo Marketing Programs to your partner Distributors. You’ll now have an amazing array of skills and experiences to prepare you for the next leadership challenge. By this stage, you’ll have a deep understanding of wine and spirits and be well versed in the strategies and relationships that build brands and produce results. You’re now a key mentor and a role model for others who are where you started. You’ll guide and advise, practicing leadership and fine tuning your problem solving and creative thinking talents. After this stage, a new world of opportunity opens up where you can choose from many different career paths.
First, you must be invited after making contact with one of our representatives on your campus. We’re very selective in schools and candidates. If invited to meet, you’ll experience a dynamic series of interviews. Finalists will be invited to a recruiting conference, where you’ll have the opportunity to interact with Gallo’s senior leaders, who are there to help you better understand your future career path. This program is so important to us, we want to get to know each and every candidate as best we can, and vice versa.
